Detail of the Walls - Cefn Sandstone

The church was built from a local sandstone, as are many other buildings in Mold, e.g. the old courthouse. Sandstone is a sedimentary rock made from sand size grains that accumulate on the beds of seas and lakes. The stone shows a variety of colours due to the fact that the sand size particles originate from a variety of sources.

A variety of small nodules of iron pyrites may be seen in the sandstone. These nodules form when the sediment is initially sedimentary rock is later cut up into building blocks the nodules at the surface become prone to weathering processes, i.e. they rust.
